interpretation of BOAT HOUSE / the pillows

2009/05/16  カテゴリー/随筆

※ただの書き溜めです、あしからず

I have a question.
If your lover tells you that “ I’ll pick a star up from sky and present for you!!”
What will you think? You feel happy? Or you’ll laugh at because it is too sweet?

BOAT HOUSEを英訳してみました。

BOAT HOUSE / the pillows

See you, bye-bye. Laughed at
And arrived at an inhabited island
Two footprints which are not mine
There was you were holding a kitty

You were laughing me
Who had been fed up with all over the world

Why you don't come to dislike me
It is strange all the time
You are the only one understand me

You sing to the my guitar
I smile to your song
We pulled a boat down and built a house
I'm not taking a "voyage" nor do I "regret"

Tonight, I'm gonna steal a star for you
And present for you

Person who believes such a silly song
It's only you
Only odd fellow, you

Someday, when I can be "sane",
Let's pull a house down and build a boat

Person who believes such a silly song
It's only you
Only odd fellow, you
Why you don't come to dislike me
Ir is strange all the time
You are the only one understand me
I thank you, I like you

           What did you feel?
If you answered “too sweet” to my first question, you may don’t like this song.
But I don’t care. I recommend this song to people understand me.

First, I would like to explain about Japanese.
It's kinds of difficult,but it's not boring, I think. I hope.

Look at Japanese paragraph4, last line, please.
There is this word「コウカイ」
It has two meanings in this case.
And in English paragraph, I put it into “not taking voyage nor do I regret”
These are homonyms of 「コウカイ」
Actually, each Japanese noun has a lot of meanings.
Each of them has own kanji. But this is not kanji. It’s called 「カタカナ」
Usually it,カタカナ, is used for words of foreign origin, as Yuka said yesterday.

Like this, in Japanese poem「バイバイ」in first line, or「ギター」in paragraph4 first line, next paragraph second one,「プレゼント」
All of them English word, we pronounce them バイバイ-bye-bye, ギター-guitar and
 プレゼント- present.
But when we use it「カタカナ」for Japanese word, it means, we want to emphasis.
In this case, it shows homonym.

That is one of most difficult point for foreign people to understand Japanese, I feel.

Next, I would like to explain about meanings of this song.

In running phrase, he says “odd fellow, you”
It means he knows himself is odd fellow in the world.

This word is used as human who is not common, in this case.

So, he is alone, no, he WAS alone, now.
That’s why he says person understand him is also odd fellow.

        And now, what is common?

Japanese like “common”
Japanese afraid of “uncommon”

Common, ordinary, everyday, routine, mediocrity.

In fact, he knows way to suit society, and to go into a mediocre crowd, but he doesn’t want to. He cannot. Absolutely.
His songs always struggle about it.
Because he is too pure to live in the foul world.

As same as this, I know what to do, what I should do, for my future.
I know I have to be “common” following Japanese thoughts.
But sometimes I feel, “I wanna live as I like. what other say be hanged”
Still, I have followed them.
Am I looser?

No.
Japans people will think looser is he, who cannot put up a good front.
We need 本音と建前 which is Japanese ward.
There are what we should do or say even if we don’t want to.
And he knows it.

But this man takes pride in the solitude. (means being alone)
Because his heart is filled with warm.
Because he believes he is right.
He is not sad about being alone. He is sad about there are few people can understand him in this world.

However, he is satisfied.
He knows it’s a good enough happiness to be understood by only one he loves.
I mean, it’s not important to be understood by everyone.

If I have a person understand me, as he says, it’s happy and I won’t need anything.

I have no idea how American feel by hearing these Japanese thoughts.
However, unfortunately, it is Japanese common thoughs.
Japanese like being same as others.
So, coming America for college, like us, is very special for Japanese.

In such a society, as soon as I knew this band, the pillows, I came to respect them.
He does nothing but believe himself even if struggle everyday.

I want to be like him. So I decided to come here, U.S. to study for my dream.

Finally, look at Japanese 7th paragraph, first line.
There is 「マトモ」
I translated it to “sane”
But, it is 「カタカナ」again.
It is also emphasized as I said few minutes ago.

In my opinion, it doesn’t mean he become sane as everybody,
This sentence’s real meanings is he hope the world change to the world, which everybody’s thoughts are same as him, pure.
And everyone is sane as him.

When the society gets better as he says, they will rebuild the boat and back to Japan.

I hope so.

Actually, this composer and songwriter is 40 years old, now.
It’s middle age. Isn’t it?
We cannot imagine such a middle age man writes this pure, beautiful and straight song.

Not only this song, but also all other songs are great.
There are slowly tunes like this song on the other hand,
there are violently tunes on the other.

This song is just one aspect of them.
They are Japanese alternative lock band which lasts 19 years now.
And they have their own refreshing sound .
It has never changed since the pillows was formed.
All songs are composed and written by Yamanaka Sawao, he is guitar vocal.

You will be able to appreciate by listening only other several songs.
When you sympathize with my interpretation, please listen to their other songs.
